ABILIS Foundation
The ABILIS Foundation is a development fund, founded by people with disabilities in Finland in 1998. Its mandate is to support activities that empower disabled people in developing countries. The ABIL IS Foundation supports activities that contribute towards equal opportunities for disabled people in society through human rights, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency. Special priority is given to activities developed and implemented by disabled women. The ABILIS Foundation gives small grants ranging from 500 to 10,000 Euros to projects initiated by disabled persons. These are one time grants for new projects. There is support available fororganisations that are run by people who have a disability, be it related to mobility, vision, hearing or any other type of disability and also toorganisations that are run by parents of children with disabilities.
Goals and Objectives: To empower disabled people.
Theme: ABILIS’s main theme is disability. The applicant organization must include people with some kind of disability in their leadership e.g. blind people, deaf people, those with mobility impairment, etc.).

Selection Criteria: ABILIS prefers applicants to be officially registered; have two referees (outsiders that know the organisation and the proposed project well), a bank account and a project idea which is realistic in scope and results. The Foundation judges applications according to the involvement of disabled people in developing projects and in committing their own resources, including time, to the project.
Application Information: The ABILIS Foundatio n will accept and review concept papers. Uninvited proposals are accepted.
Budget Information
- Funding is between €500 and €10,000; which is approximately USD600 -12,000.
- A minimum of 10% of the project budget should be a contribution of time, money or other resources from the applicant group.
- Funds can be used for advocacy, awareness raising, training, capacity building, income generation among others.
- Funds cannot be used for extensive construction work, purchase of vehicles or medical rehabilitation.
- Overhead and core costs can be included if reasonable amounts are communicated.
- ABILIS accepts co-funding.
Proposal and Project Information
- The funding period is for a maximum of 2 years.
- Projects cannot be extended. Funding is one-off.
- Proposals should be written in English, French, Spanish or Russian. Letters in other languages are also welcome but take a slightly longer time to process.
- Applicants should contact ABILIS to obtain the format of the standard application form. ABILIS also provides manuals on participatory project planning and project proposal writing to assist applicants to develop projects and proposals.
- It takes 3 -6 months to process an application.
