THE decision to use riels on the forthcoming stock exchange may alienate some foreign investors, at least at the start, but in the longer term opting against dollar listings was the right decision.

ENTERTAINMENT Gaming Asia has announced it will open a casino in Kampot province, as officials say the province is becoming increasingly attractive for potential casinos. Ministry of Economy and Finance chief of casino management Chrun Theravath said that border casinos located in Poipet near Thailand and Bavet near Vietnam had long proved profitable for the state.

Indochine Mining Limited today claimed to have made a discovery of a “high grade” gold-bearing quartz vein at its Kratie North project. Claiming its best result returned 42 grams of gold per tonne, the company said the Kratie North site was a key focus of its exploration programme, launched in February.

Cambodia is poised to see an increase in United States investment as the world financial crisis recedes, according to Overseas Private Investment Corporation director of public affairs Lawrence Spinelli. The world’s economic downturn had hit the Kingdom particularly hard, while restricting access to credit for American firms planning to expand abroad, he said on Monday.

A financial instrument that will help to formalise interbank lending in Cambodia is set to launch “very soon”, the central bank has said. Interbank markets, where institutions borrow and lend to each other largely to either maintain required reserves or profit from an excess of them, are common in most developed economies.
