Election Monitor Finds Irregularities in Registration

The Committee for Free and Fair Elections said Wednesday it had noted irregularities in the voter registration process that ended this month. In a report released Wednesday, Comfrel said it found irregularities in the registration process itself and in the quality of registration lists. The group also noted a lack of confidence among non-ruling parties.

Assembly Approves Payment Guarantee for Power Plant

The National Assembly on Monday approved a government payment guarantee to a power company planning to build a coal-fired plant in Preah Sihanouk province. The guarantee obliges the government to pay the Cambodia International Investment Development Group, which is owned by ruling party senator Lao Meng Khin, in case the state-owned Electrucite du Cambodge, fails to pay them for their power.

US Assists With Nuclear Scanner at Coastal Port

The US National Nuclear Security Administration is helping Cambodia install a scanning system in the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk that will help prevent the smuggling of nuclear materials, officials said Monday. Eight port and customs officials are currently being trained on the use of the scanner, which will examine all import and export goods passing through the Port of Sihanoukville, said Lu Kim Chhun, director-general of the port.

Former Refugees Celebrate 60 Years of UN Convention

The UN human rights agency held the 60 th anniversary of its convention of refugees in Washington this month, where delegations of former refugees, including Cambodians, and policymakers met to encourage governments to continue to shelter refugees worldwide. The Refugee Congress included stories from those who fled their home countries and made good in their host nations, including Alejandro Mayorkas, director of the US Citizen and Immigration Services. Mayorkas, who fled Cuba in 1960 with his parents and his sister, said at the congress he had seen “first hand the extraordinary work of UNHCR.” But Mayorkas said he was concerned with the US budget crisis, an increase in funds for refugee assistance was doubtful

Koh Kong Villagers File Corruption Complaint Against Court

Villagers who say they were ousted from their land in Koh Kong province after losing a land dispute filed suit against the provincial court on Monday through the national Anti-Corruption Unit. In their complaint, 32 families from Srey Ambel district say the court ordered in favor of a powerful businessman in 2008 due to falsified documents abetted by five court officials.

Three hacked in dance party axe attack KRAKOR district police are searching for a suspect who was accused of hacking three men, aged between 20 and 24, with an axe at a dance party on Thursday night in Pursat province. Police said that the three men were dancing when a group of men arrived and attacked them, leaving one of them severely injured. The suspects escaped from the scene and police said the motive for the attack was due to a rival gang conflict
