The Asian Development Bank on Wednesday said Cambodia would likely reach a 6.8 percent economic growth rate for 2011. The ADB estimate was a bump up from the 6.5 percent forecast earlier this year, but much less than Prime Minister Hun Sen’s figure of 8.7 percent, which he said in a speech this week was possible

Air France resumed direct flights to Cambodia on Thursday, after it last pulled up its wheels in 1974 ahead of a Khmer Rouge takeover. Officials said the resumption of flights was due to an increase in tourism and investment in Cambodia.

Photo by: Will Baxter SOUTH Korea’s return to the position of number-one visitor to Cambodia in January might not seem significant, but for the travel industry it symbolises the final stage of recovery. Replacing Vietnamese at the top of the arrivals list, the strong rebound in South Korean visitors, up an annualised 36.9 percent according to Ministry of Tourism figures released last week, represents the return of high-spending tourists from developed countries.

The Council for the Development of Cambodia on Friday will consider a proposal to concede thousands of hectares of protected rainforest in Koh Kong province to a private company that claims substantial mining potential. Environmental groups have expressed concern that the project would enact a devastating toll on the environment and local community, yet still fail to live up to the hype. Chea Chet, CEO of United Khmer Group, which is seeking exploitation rights, has claimed that the 20,400 hectare area contains US$35 billion to $135 billion worth of titanium.

CROSSINGS made by tourists and traders across the Cambodia-Thailand border are still going strong, officials said yesterday, despite political turmoil and a deadly border clash. “Everything is normal,” said Sao Bunrith, chief of the Poipet border checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province, the main crossing to Thailand.

IT was the only airline to fly from Bangkok to Phnom Penh in the early nineties, the sole carrier to do so on the same route during the factional political infighting of July 1997, and briefly also had a monopoly between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Now the last remaining Bangkok Airways monopoly in Cambodia on the lucrative Bangkok-Siem Reap route looks to be under threat. Further confirmation this week that Cambodia Angkor Air is to join Bangkok Airways in flying between Southeast Asia’s main air hub – Bangkok – and one of the region’s premier tourist attractions – Siem Reap – represents good news for the industry
